The transparent and brightly colored corundum is called gem(brown aluminum oxide). If there is trace chromium, it is red, it is called ruby, and the titanium containing corundum is blue. Natural corundum is mainly used for grinding materials, bearings, gemstones and decorative articles. It is mainly produced in India, Myanmar, Brazil, the United States and China's Hebei, Henan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Shandong and Xinjiang(aluminum oxide grit). Industrial alumina is the raw material of alumina with high purity.

There are two kinds of artificial corundum: fused corundum and sintered corundum(brown aluminium oxide). Fused corundum includes brown corundum, white corundum, single crystal corundum, chrome corundum, microcrystalline corundum, zircon corundum, spectral ammonium corundum, vanadium corundum, etc(synthetic corundum). Its physical and chemical properties are as follows: Al2O3 is over 94%, density is 3.65-4.05g/cm, microhardness (HV) is 17640-24010mpa.

Widely used in metallurgy, chemical industry, building materials, ceramics, abrasives and other industries(silicon carbide abrasive). High alumina, anthracite and iron scraps or industrial alumina are used to melt, reduce, melt and recrystallize in an electric arc furnace, or industrial alumina or type is sintered at a high temperature above 1900 ℃(emery abrasive). Dense fused corundum, also known as low porosity fused corundum, is a new type of high-grade refractory.

It is mainly used as ramming material, castable, slide plate, integral spray gun for hot metal pretreatment and refining, ramming stopper for continuous casting, immersion nozzle and various corundum bricks(green silicon carbide). Its A12O3 content is about 99%, and the impurities are Nao, SiO2, feo2, TiO2, Cao, MgO, K2O, etc. It has good wear resistance, corrosion resistance and volume stability at high temperature(aluminum oxide abrasive media). The main crystal phase is a-Al2O3, which is acid and alkali resistant.

In addition, there are some intermediate compounds from monohydrate to v-a12o3 and from diaspore to a-a12o3(aluminum oxide abrasive). When industrial alumina is heated, it is difficult to sinter industrial alumina containing a large amount of y-A12O3, 7-a12o3 to form a single particle porous aggregate(46 grit aluminum oxide). In addition, there are A12O3 and Cao, which mostly form low melting point minerals and affect the high temperature properties of forsterite.

Since 7-a12o3 can be transformed into corundum (a-a12o3) in the range of 950 ~ 1200 ℃(black silicon carbide), and significant volume shrinkage occurs at the same time, it should be considered whether high-temperature pre sintering is required in use (such as ceramic industry). Bayer process uses NaOH as the circulating mother liquor to treat bauxite and make alumina in the ore dissolve in the alkali liquor to produce sodium aluminate solution(240 grit aluminum oxide).
