At the beginning of this century, the open hearth steelmaking method has been developed rapidly, which is based on other steelmaking methods(aluminium oxide blasting). Around 1950, the world's open hearth steel production accounted for about 80% of the total steel production. The spray gun used for flame gunning can move up and down or rotate(fused aluminum oxide). It was used in steelmaking in 1865, so open hearth furnace is also called Martin furnace.


In 1955, the U.S. Open Hearth steel production accounted for 90.3% of the total steel production, that is to say, the development of open hearth steel reached its peak(brown aluminium oxide). Since the oxygen converter steelmaking process came out in the early 1950s, it has shown incomparable advantages, with the increasing output, resulting in the decline of the proportion of open hearth steel year by year and the possibility of being eliminated(60 grit aluminum oxide).


The furnace lining of BOF gunning by flame method was developed in the Soviet Union(silicon carbide abrasive). Open hearth furnace is a kind of reverberatory furnace without regenerator. It can be used for gunning of the entire furnace lining or parts(150 grit aluminum oxide). It should be pointed out that open hearth steel still accounts for a certain proportion of the world's steel output, accounting for about 25% in 1978 and still about 20% at present.


Japan has finished the history of flat steel-making(aluminum oxide abrasive). In general, 13 heats can be used for gunning lining. The proportion of French Open Hearth steel is also very small, accounting for only 0.9% of the total steel production in 180 years. Generally speaking(220 grit aluminum oxide blast media), the output of open hearth furnace increases exponentially and the fuel consumption decreases significantly after oxygen blowing; and the service life is shortened.


The countries with more open hearth steel production now include the Soviet Union, China, the United States, Poland, Spain, Canada, India, etc(aluminum oxide grit). while vigorously developing oxygen converter steelmaking, these countries have also carried out technical transformation of open hearth steel, and the main measure is to adopt oxygen blowing technology(synthetic corundum price). The last open hearth furnace was flamed out at the end of 1977.


There are three mature methods of open hearth oxygen blowing technology(brown fused alumina): inserting oxygen gun from the top of furnace to blow oxygen into the molten pool, which is called oxygen top blowing open hearth; inserting oxygen gun from the bottom or back wall to blow oxygen into the molten pool(fused aluminium oxide), adapting to oxygen blowing and reforming furnace type, i.e. developing double bed open hearth furnace, and there are 6 in total.


In 980, the output of open hearth steel in the Soviet Union was about 90 million tons, ranking first in the world(80 grit aluminum oxide). The maximum capacity of the open hearth furnace is 200 tons. There are 13 double bed open hearth furnaces. In 1966, the oxygen consumption of open hearth furnace was 24.4 M / t class, in 1973, it was 50.2 M / T steel(aluminum oxide blast media 60 grit), and recently it reached about 70 m / T steel. It was developed by F. Martin and P. Martin.


However, in the early stage of oxygen blowing(220 grit aluminum oxide), due to the rapid increase of the amount of molten dust in the furnace, the spatter of slag and metal is serious, the temperature of the furnace increases, the service condition of the furnace lining deteriorates, especially the damage of the furnace top is intensified(alumina grit), which is called deep buried oxygen blowing method (i.e. KOV method) or oxygen bottom blowing open hearth.
